Professional Development Coaching

Coaching has been shown to increase wellbeing, self-confidence, responsibility, and professional fulfillment. It also improves performance and provides tools students will utilize throughout their medical career.

What is Professional Development Coaching? It is a learner centered process that facilitates reflection in a safe environment to assist the student in gaining insight into their performance and help them identify specific action plans to implement so they can reach their highest potential. It adds a layer of accountability as well as provide a longitudinal, nonjudgemental, supportive relationship, which is key to inspiring the commitment to change and grow.

Who are the Professional Development Coaches?  They are MD or DO faculty members at the School of Medicine. Please keep in mind that coaches are not content experts or therapists. Nor do they grade you during your medical school courses. Coaches are there for the learner when they encounter times of struggle and help them determine what is holding them back so they can move past that.

What is your role in the coaching relationship?  You are the driver of the coaching relationship- you will work to recognize your strengths and gaps, set goals, experiment, and reflect on the process as you work towards your goals.
