The Academic Resource & Support Office within OMED works in conjunction with the Course and Clerkship Directors, Advisory Deans, and the Office of Student Affairs to assist all medical students in meeting the academic challenges faced in medical school.
During MS1 orientation, Laura Jeannerette, Senior Advisor for Medical Education, meets with incoming students to discuss a variety of resources available to them to optimally support the diverse academic demands of medical school.
Ms. Jeannerette serves as advisor to the Student Academic Resource Consortium (SARC) for MS1 & MS2. First-year students are introduced to SARC representatives and to the SARC Manual which outlines peer feedback and suggestions on how to best navigate the coming year.
Other academic support services available to first and second-year students include the following:
- Peer tutoring sessions provided free of charge as needed or requested.
- Individual academic counseling appointments, as needed or requested, to discuss effective methods for studying, time management, and/or test taking skills.
- Support for students with documented disabilities and screening for previously undiagnosed learning difficulties (including referral to professionals and outside resources as needed).
- Support and referrals to meet any need that is an obstacle to optimal academic performance.
Academic support services for all medical students include:
- The Educational Resource Room which is located in Suite S592 Scaife Hall. It is a small library of relevant resources for both course work and the USMLE Board Examinations.
- Confidential assistance for students who request additional resources and direction with first and second year curriculum and clerkships (especially as related to time management, utilizing study skills effectively and efficiently, test taking and anxiety, and any other issues which may arise).
- The review period for the USMLE Step 1 examination is organized by OMED to support second-year students’ preparation needs via faculty review sessions, NBME assessment exams, and a class meeting with students from the previous year’s Step 1 exam whose performance demonstrated especially successful Step 1 preparation (for feedback and examples of study plans).
- Individual meetings with students, as requested, to assist in developing personalized study plans for the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 examinations as well as clerkship shelf exams.
